Things To Do When You Feel Burnt Out

We all burn out sometimes. One of the things that I always feel is that my burn out is a failure. But it is anything but. Burn out happens to the best of us and has nothing to do with us not loving what we do.

You can love running, writing, your work passionately and still experience burn out that makes everything that you love feel like a chore. It is impossible to go full throttle all the time and if you see someone that seemingly does, trust me, they don’t.

There are tips and tricks that you can use when you start to feel burn out though. Even if you are already experiencing it, remind yourself that it’s okay to feel the way that you feel. Take a break, talk to yourself gently and try a few of these tactics.

  1. Allow yourself to cancel plans: Sometimes we push ourselves to do more when we start to feel burnt out. Don’t try and pile more people onto your burn out. Look at your calender and find a few things that you can take out.
  2. Let yourself hit snooze: Sleep. Oh the power of sleep. 7-8 hours of sleep is something that some of us take pride on not needing. But you do need it. Studies have shown that 6 hours of sleep or less are almost as bad as none at all. Take your time to sleep and refresh yourself. Both your body and your mind need it.
  3. Take a break from your phone: We have been conditioned. This is no surprise anymore but no matter how many apps we have to monitor what we are using on our phones, we will still jump when we hear the simple ding of a text message. Turn it off. Leave it in the other room when you sleep. Unsync it from your watch.
  4. Request a mental health day: Sometimes we just need a break. In many other places they have way more time off then we do in the USA. We pride ourselves on freedom but we tend to be enslaved by the clock. If you have time off, take it and dont explain yourself. Take some time to yourself. You are more productive when you aren’t burnt out.
  5. Try meditation: Meditation is powerful, as we have talked about before. More importantly its like hitting a reset button on your brain. Try a guided meditation, starting with just five minutes.
  6. Indulge in a full body stretch: Your mind isn’t the only thing that gets tired and knotted up. The body is more powerful than we like to give it credit for in our current climate. Take a few minutes to do some gentle yoga or a full body stretch. It loosens up your muscles and increases oxygen to your body and brain.
  7. Order take out: Not to get into feminism talk but women and in some cases men, are expected to both work full time and be a full time care giver. You cant do it all. There is a simple solution though. Take one of those tasks off your list and get take out instead of cooking dinner. Even if it’s just you.
  8. Vent in a journal: Never underestimate the power of venting. The words you use are powerful so it stands to reason that when you are in a burnt out, getting those feelings out and actually verbalizing them can be so so good for you.
  9. Put on something funny: Stop dwelling on the things that you feel burnt out on. Put on something funny or something that takes your mind off of it. Dwelling is not going to restore your passion.
  10. Get some fresh air: You would be surprised how much we don’t actually breath fresh air. Oxygen guys. Being outdoors has a host of health benefits for your body and mind. Get out and breath some in.
