Braided Bread

There is nothing in the world that gets my senses moving like fresh baked bread. It seems like something over the top, something that we have to pay artisan prices. You don’t. It’s so easy to make and is so impressive. Making your own bread is also much healthier for you.

In this recipe, you take a basic bread recipe and and weave in any sort of flavor that you like. You can go for a sweet sort of breakfast bread or make it savory with pesto and mozzarella or red pepper spread. Either way that you do it, you will find something that ignites whoever you are cooking for.

  • 6 ounces of room temp milk
  • 20 grams yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 11 ounces flour
  • 1 ounce olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Pesto/ walnuts and maple syrup/ whatever you want to stuff it with

Mix yeast, milk and sugar in a large bowl until dissolved. Add in flour, oil and salt. Knead dough.

Let rest in a warm spot for one hour until doubled in size.

Take dough out and roll with a rolling pin into a rectangle. Cut rectangle in half. Using a pastry brush, spread out your filling on the dough. Take the dough and roll each rectangle tight on itself. Pinch the ends to seal them and then weave or braid them together.

Using a floured bread dish, place braid into it, cut into top in pattern with sharp knife and cover. Let it have its second rise for about an hour. Place in oven at 350 F for 30 minutes or until golden.

Serve with whatever suits the filling. I love infused butters and the like.
