Creating a Full Moon Ritual

We all hear things about the full moon. It’s hardly even witchy anymore. And it shouldn’t be. The full and new moon holds a deep connection with humans. It controls the tides, shows the cycles of the earth moving and brings about a deep spiritual connection to all of us. Even if we don’t understand it completely. Something weird going on? Blame the full moon.

But really the Full moon, which will be coming up this month on the 16th, giving you just enough time to plan, and the rituals that surround it hold a great deal of meaning, While the sun represents the external, the moon has always been associated with the internal: our hidden emotions, desires, our shadow-self, fears/worries and our dreams.  It represents our feelings, our unconscious beliefs, the past and our yin or feminine goddess archetype.  The New Moon offers us the ability to feel, learn from the past and creatively unlock and express our essence.

The full moon represents the middle of the 29 day cycle. It is associated with heightened emotions, but also with the manifestation of vision. It is a great time to really get in though with your inner self. Here are some rituals that can take place during the moon to enhance self care.

  1. Moon Baths: Moon baths are lovely. Basically it means sitting outside under the moon and “Bathing” in its rays. Its also a great time to meditate, do yoga, or bring out any objects you want to purify (Crystals, books, tarot carts, ect).
  2. Letting go: This is part of meditation as well but in a different way. Write down something that you want to let go of. Take a candle, lighter and the piece of paper into a safe space. Closing your eyes, imagine letting go of this thing or situation. Burn it as you think about the way you want to feel.
  3. Smugging and cleansing ritual: The full moon is the perfect time to cleanse your space. Open your windows and doors to do this and release the negative energy from your space. Using a smug stick burn and let the smoke carry out that negative energy. Make sure that the smug you are using is good for the environment. Paleo Santo has become very popular over the last few years but is actually endangered. As is white sage. Make sure that you can find a smug that aids you and the rest of the world.

Remember that rituals are more personal and spiritual than most would think. Its not so much about some higher power as it is about harnessing your own power and beauty.
